How likely is Georgia to make the College Football Playoff? Game by game predictions

The Georgia Bulldogs seemed like a sure lock to make this year’s college football playoff, especially with the expanded 12-team format.

After missing the playoffs entirely last season with just one loss, the Bulldogs wanted to avenge that snub and prove they were still national title contenders.

However, after falling 28-10 to Ole Miss in Week 11, Georgia’s path back to the playoffs is now much more complicated than once thought. ESPN’s playoff predictor currently has the team a 73 percent chance of making the 12-team field but whether that comes to fruition depends on how they handle their last three games.

The Bulldogs don’t have much time to lick their wounds and regroup as a massive contest looms in Week 12. Fix that, and their last two games should be a walk to the playoffs.

Tennessee vs. Georgia (November 16)

The Dawgs have a 62 percent chance to redeem themselves at home against the SEC-leading Volunteers. Head coach Kirby Smart tends not to make the same mistakes twice, and it’s very difficult to come into Athens and steal a win. This would be Georgia’s toughest remaining regular-season contest, so if they take care of business here and run the table in Atlanta, they’ll have a 96 percent chance of making the playoffs even without the SEC crown.

UMass vs. Georgia (Nov. 22)

I know what you all are wondering. How the hell did Georgia get this comfortable late-in-the-year matchup? Well, the Dawgs have been featured in early season games, so they had to hold off on the non-conference slate until now. UMass collects a $1.9 million check get handed a fat L in week 13 and no one is really complaining but us on the couch. Even ESPN gives the Minutemen a zero percent chance of pulling off the upset.

Georgia Tech v. Georgia (Nov. 29)

Also known as Clean, Old Fashioned Hate, this classic rivalry game could determine Georgia’s entire season. The Yellow Jackets beat undefeated Miami in Week 11 and could have the Dawgs in their sights if Smart doesn’t prepare his guys right. A loss here would mean Georgia likely doesn’t make the SEC title game, dropping its playoff chances to 61 percent and, if we’re being honest, leaving the Dawgs with three losses on the outside.

If Georgia takes care of business and goes 3-0 over the last month, it will either get a first-round bye as the SEC champion or host 9-seed Indiana in Athens.
