Murfreesboro man accused of carrying a gun into two elementary schools

A Murfreesboro man was arrested after allegedly openly carrying a gun on two school campuses Monday.

Austin Diller, 22, arrived on the campus of John Pittard Elementary School around 11:28 this morning looking for information about his younger brother’s enrollment.

Diller then went to Erma Siegel Elementary School and asked the same thing.

When they turned to leave, school staff members noticed on surveillance camera that he was openly carrying a gun in a holster he was wearing. Diller left campus before a school resource officer (SRO) could reach him.

All schools in Murfreesboro County and nearby private schools were placed on lockdown due to Diller’s location after he left Erma Siegel Elementary. A light lockdown means that visitors are not allowed to enter the schools, while no students are allowed to leave the respective campuses.

With the help of a license plate reader (LPR), authorities were able to track down Diller and arrest him. He is being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $5,000 bond.
