Sheriff’s report: Man arrested for assault after traffic incident

A 56-year-old man was arrested for assault after a traffic incident near the mall.

He told deputies he “was a little frustrated” and admitted to grabbing someone, a Summit County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Law enforcement arrived at the mall and saw a group of four, as well as the 56-year-old man.

The group translated for another driver, who explained that he was driving the speed limit on Kilby Road when the suspect pulled up behind him and started honking. The driver pulled into the mall parking lot, where the 56-year-old man followed.

Both parties exited their vehicles, the report said. The 56-year-old asked the other driver if he had pulled out in front of him and told him to watch where he was going and be more careful.

The other driver said he didn’t speak English, to which the 56-year-old replied: “You might want to learn that.” He gave a vulgar warning and returned to his vehicle.

The man reversed as if to leave, but then got out of the vehicle again. The other driver was filming the encounter and the 56-year-old asked why he was taking pictures.

The 56-year-old then knocked the phone out of the other driver’s hands, breaking it. He also hit the other driver in the ribs and pushed him to the ground, the report said. The video shows the phone being knocked down and the push, but not the punch.

The other driver picked up the phone and shot a video of the 56-year-old swearing at him and leaving the scene. He returned to the area before deputies arrived.

Deputies arrested the 56-year-old man. He was charged with assault and damaging/interrupting a communication device. He is being held in the Summit County Jail on bond.

The sheriff’s office responded to several other calls between Monday, Nov. 4 and Sunday, Nov. 10, including reports of driving under the influence, active warrants and speeding.

Saturday, November 9

Deputies conducted a traffic stop and learned the driver was in violation of an ignition interlock restriction. The person had no valid insurance or registration and was driving with a suspended license. Deputies then learned the driver did not have permission from the registered owner to operate the vehicle. The registered owner refused to file a complaint and just wanted the car back. The driver was arrested on multiple charges and booked into the Summit County Jail.

A vehicle was observed speeding on westbound Interstate 80 at the Kimball Junction ramp. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped the car, which was going between 84 and 86 mph. The driver slowed down and continued for more than a mile before stopping. The driver admitted to consuming two beers and performed poorly on a standardized field sobriety test. He provided a breath test that produced a blood-alcohol reading of 0.111, more than twice the legal limit in Utah. The man was arrested and charged with alleged drunken driving, speeding and no valid license.

Wednesday, November 6

A vehicle was observed going 5 mph over the posted speed limit on Main Street in Coalville. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped the car and noticed signs of damage while speaking with the driver. Six nearly empty beer bottles and one nearly empty 32 ounce bottle were found on the floor of the passenger seat. The woman was arrested and charged.
