16-year-old boy dies; 1 arrested in accidental shooting in Baker, police say

BAKER, La. (WAFB) – A 16-year-old boy is dead and has been arrested in an accidental shooting in Baker, according to police.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the 1000 block of Florida Avenue in Baker.

Friends of the victim confirmed to WAFB that his name is Dacy Gaspard.

According to police, preliminary information received suggested that “a firearm was accidentally discharged while the subjects were handling an assault rifle” in the bedroom of a home.

An arrest warrant has been obtained for Tra’meir Smith, 18, on a charge of negligent homicide, police said. They added that Smith was arrested through the New Orleans Police Department as a fugitive.

Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn said the investigation is still in its early stages.
