16-year-old boy dies; 1 arrested in accidental shooting in Baker, police say

BAKER, La. (WAFB) – A 16-year-old boy is dead and has been arrested in an accidental shooting in Baker, according to police.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the 1000 block of Florida Avenue in Baker.

According to police, preliminary information received suggested a firearm was accidentally discharged while the subjects were handling an assault rifle inside a bedroom of a residence.

An arrest warrant has been obtained for Tra’meir Smith, 18, on a charge of negligent homicide, police said. They added that Smith was arrested through the New Orleans Police Department as a fugitive.

Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn said the investigation is still in its early stages.

The name of the 16-year-old victim has not been released.
