2 people allegedly linked to biker gang arrested after fight at Sarnia Remembrance Day ceremony

A Remembrance Day ceremony in Sarnia, Ontario, was interrupted Monday, police said, by the presence and arrest of several alleged members of an outlaw motorcycle gang.

Wreathbearers marched along the parade route to the cenotaph where the ceremony took place. Police say “several people who were not part of the procession entered the wreath-laying line.”

“They were wearing clothing associated with an outlaw motorcycle gang (OMG) and wore a black crown in the colors of their club,” police said in a statement.

The ceremony was hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion and registered organizations were invited to lay wreaths. These wreaths are part of the Legion’s fundraising efforts and have a uniform look so they are respectful, police noted.

The organizers allegedly asked the people to leave, they refused to do so and the police were asked to intervene.

“These individuals later refused police requests to leave by loudly using foul and abusive language, disrupting the solemnity of the Remembrance Day ceremony,” police said.

While officers removed the individuals from the road, the statement said, the behavior continued and “as a result, it was necessary for the officers to arrest the individuals.”

Video of the incident posted online by Your TVSarnia appears to show two men in leather jackets with large insignia on the backs of the jackets being escorted through the crowd by three police officers in tactical gear, while a woman follows behind. One of the men appears to be wearing a black crown and fights the police, eventually being knocked to the ground. The woman, who was not wearing a motorcycle jacket, appears to struggle with an officer and is knocked to the ground. At least seven officers appear to be involved in the response.

A 64-year-old Sarnia man was charged with causing a disturbance and breaching a court order, while a 46-year-old woman was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Both will appear in court at a future date.

Sarnia Legion Branch 62 later posted a statement with a link to national policy saying the wearing of biker gang or outlaw club colors is prohibited by the Royal Canadian Legion at Legion events and facilities because it is “contrary to the Articles of Faith of the Legion and disrespectful of the sacrifices made by our veterans.”

“It’s important to recognize that motorcycle club members — like the Legion Riders — do a lot of advocacy work for the Legion and in communities across the country,” the statement said. The statement goes on to say that all bikers are welcome at Legion branches and events, but must remove their colors beforehand.
