States with the most weather-related car accidents: Study

Driving in general it can be dangerous with millions of cars on the road every day, but this is especially the case in bad weather.

Rain, sleet or snow can really affect a driver’s skills.

On average, more than 5.8 million accidents occur each year, according to the Department of Transportationand about 21% of these accidents are weather-related.

Nearly 5,000 people are killed and more than 418,000 people are injured in weather-related car accidents each year.

A recent study conducted by a personal injury law firm in Ohio analyzed all fatal crashes in the United States between 2018 and 2022 and found which states had the highest number of fatal crashes due to inclement weather.

Alaska tops the list

The study looked at all fatal crashes that occurred in bad weather, which included:

  • Clear sky
  • rain (fog)
  • Sleet, hail
  • Snow
  • Fog, smog, smoke
  • Strong crosswinds
  • Sand, dirt, dirt
  • Other
  • Cloudy
  • Blown snow
  • Freezing rain or drizzle

Alaska passed Finch Law Firm of the states with the most weather accidents listed, 22.74% of fatal accidents occur in adverse weather conditions.

The accidents that took place during the winter represented 10.28% of the total percentage.

In second place was West Virginia, with 16.56% of all fatal accidents occurring mostly in rainy weather.

Arizona had the fewest weather-related crashes, with 2.93 percent of all fatal crashes occurring in inclement weather.
