EMT license revoked after sex abuse conviction • Iowa Capital Dispatch

The state of Iowa has revoked the license of a former Lee County EMT who is serving a 30-year prison sentence for sexually abusing a 10-year-old child.

In 2023, Daniel Jannusch, 39, of Donnellson, was charged with incest and second-degree sexual abuse. At the time, the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma issued an emergency order suspending Jannusch’s paramedic license on the grounds that he posed “an immediate danger to the public health, safety and welfare.”

Police said the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services investigated a case last August when the agency found Jannusch “told multiple people about an incident involving a minor child.”

The 10-year-old victim was then interviewed and, according to police, she alleged that Jannusch placed her on a bed and began kissing her while reaching down her pants and rubbing her genitals for several minutes. Police also allege that Jannusch “admitted to co-workers that the incident occurred.” At the time, Jannusch was working for the Lee County Ambulance Service.

Jannusch pleaded not guilty to the charges. After several continuances, a jury trial was held this month and Jannusch was found guilty of both charges. On October 4, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He has since filed a notice with the court indicating that he intends to appeal his conviction.

Court records from the 8th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services indicate that Jannusch worked for Lee County Emergency Medical Services for 10 years before being fired following his arrest.

Lee County EMS operates out of three stations located in Donnellson, Fort Madison and Keokuk and responds to approximately 5,900 emergency calls per year.
