“Bad” dolls with the wrong adult link pulled from the shelves

play

The toy company Mattel draws its line of “River” dolls from shelves and online stores after fans noticed the packaging mistakenly listed an explicit adult website instead of the movie website.

Fashion dolls based on characters from the highly anticipated film adaptation of the award-winning Broadway musical coming to theaters this month incorrectly listed the website URL on the boxes and in the instructions inside which leads to an adult website. The correct website of the movie is wickedmovie.com.

The URL on the “Wicked” dolls just says “wicked,” which displays an age verification message and highly sexually explicit content on a long-running porn site.

According to the packaging, the dolls are designed for children aged 4 and up.

“Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, opens Nov. 22. The film tells the previously untold story of the witches of Oz and the unlikely friendship between the popular and privileged Glinda and the misunderstood young woman with an unusual green. leather, Elphaba. It is based on the hugely popular Broadway show, which was based on the best-selling book by Gregory Maguire.

The toy company issued an apology on Sunday afternoon. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate steps to correct it,” Mattel said in a statement to the media, urging parents and guardians to dispose of the “inappropriate” packaging.

A Reddit user named iamwomanhearmepour pointed out the error in a post friday“Not sure if this is a mistake from Mattel or Universal? Is anyone else seeing this!?!?”

More parents posted on X on the weekend, saying they are shocked and angry according to them the kids went to the wrong website.

Here’s what we know.

Where can I find Wicked dolls?

Numerous national retailers carried the fashion dolls such as Sam’s Club, Walmart, Aim, Toys r Usand Amazon but by Sunday evening they had been withdrawn or listed online as unavailable.

The dolls, which retailed for $24.99, are already appearing on eBay and other online auction sites with prices up to $250.

Which ‘Wicked’ toys had the adult site link?

Link appears on the regular Elphaba, Glinda, and Nessarose dolls, as well as the deluxe Elphaba and Glinda dolls. The link doesn’t seem to be on any other “Wicked” merchandise so far.

What did Mattel say about the site’s adult error?

“Mattel has been made aware of a typographical error on the packaging of Mattel Wicked collectible dolls, sold primarily in the US, which is intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” the company said in a statement Sunday. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate steps to correct it.

“Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not suitable for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or hide the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for additional information.”

When does Wicked come out?

“Wicked,” will be released Nov. 22 in major theaters as the first chapter of a two-part series. “Wicked Part Two” is scheduled to arrive in US theaters on November 21, 2025.

What does Wicked rate?

The film will be rated PG when it hits theaters in November. The film’s description cites “scary action, thematic material and brief suggestive material”.

The packaging mistake follows the ‘Wicked’ poster controversy.

Earlier, the much-anticipated film was in the news for another reason: star Cynthia Erivowho plays the green-skinned Elphaba, called a fan-altered poster “deeply painful.”

The fan had altered one of the film’s promotional posters, in which Ariana GrandeGlinda whispers in Elphaba’s ear as her face is hidden by her witch hat. This made the film’s poster – which featured Erivo staring into the camera – more like Broadway musical artwork, but Erivo was offended.

“This is the most savage and offensive thing I’ve seen, on par with that horrible AI we’re fighting from…” Erivo wrote in a Instagram story above the edited “Wicked” poster. “None of this is funny. None of this is nice. It degrades me. It degrades us.”

Erivo pointed out that the original poster was an illustration. “I’m a real-life human being who chose to look right down the camera at you, the viewer … because, without words, we communicate with our eyes,” she said. “Our poster is a tribute, not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that’s just deeply hurtful.”
