LA residents will have a chance to weigh in on the proposed Dodger Stadium gondola

The top line:

A painful plan to build an aerial tram connecting Los Angeles Union Station to Dodger Stadium will be discussed at a public meeting on Tuesday, November 12.

Backstory: Game days at Dodger Stadium can cause heavy traffic jams. The nearest public transport train station is approximately 25 minutes’ walk from the stadium. The LA Transit Agency was mocked on social media to promote the bypass before this year’s World Series. Gondola providers, including former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, say congestion would be eased by transporting fans from a train station in Downtown LA to the stadium via a new aerial tramway.

Controversy: Many residents of nearby Chinatown — a historically accessible neighborhood where long-term residents now face pressure to move out — opposed the gondola. They claim it could accelerate remodeling trends that price low-income renters. Homeowners also worried that streetcar passengers could be given clear views of their private residences.

What’s happening now: California State Parks will hold a virtual meeting from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 12th to discuss a proposed General Plan amendment that would allow the gondola to be built over the historic LA State Park. Details for participating via Zoom – and providing written public comments – can be found here.
