Deadly shooting at Tuskegee University leads to arrest for machine gun possession

An arrest has been made in connection with the deadly shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama that killed an 18-year-old and left at least 16 people injured early Sunday.

Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, was charged with possessing a machine gun, according to authorities, who said he was found leaving the scene of the shooting.

killer barrage of gunfire broke out around 1:40 a.m. on the Macon County campus as the school’s centennial festivities were wrapping up, authorities said.

A statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announcing the arrest on Sunday did not say whether authorities were looking for additional suspects, but urged the public to continue to send relevant information to the FBI.

According to radio transmissions from police officers sent to the campus to investigate the shooting, multiple shooters were initially suspected.

“There’s going to be two shooters right now, maybe more,” an officer said in a radio call, according to broadcasts provided by Broadcastify.

The campus shooting resulted in the “death of an individual outside the university,” the university said in a statement released early Sunday.

“The parents of this person have been notified,” the statement said. “Several others, including students from Tuskegee University, were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”

State police said Sunday afternoon that the person killed in the shooting was 18 years old. Police said of the 16 people injured in the shootings, 12 were hit by gunfire and four were injured during the incident, some while fleeing from the roof.

“Special agents are still in the process of gathering and reviewing information regarding the sequence of events that ultimately led to the shooting,” ALEA said Sunday morning.

Officials asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators immediately. Authorities also asked potential witnesses to upload any digital files of the incident, including video, to the FBI.

University officials added, “The university is in the process of finalizing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

Tuskegee University canceled classes Monday and announced that grief counselors will be available for students in the school chapel.
