For nearly 17 years, George Metesky terrorized New York City in a series of bombings as a way to get revenge on his former employer. Metesky’s reign of terror left investigators exploring every avenue possible to end the bombings. It would spawn criminal profiling as the commanding officer of the NYPD’s bomb squad turned to a psychiatrist and his then-unconventional investigative technique to focus on the man known to New Yorkers as the “Mad Bomber.” In doing so, the attacker was brought to justice, and investigators began to consider what we now know as criminal profiling as a useful tool for solving crimes.
