The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomed the dismissal of Kabelo Gwamanda.

Gwamana, a former member of the Mayor’s Committee (MMC) for Community Development, was sacked by the Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and replaced by Tebogo Nkoukou.

Gwamanda was recently suspended following his arrest.

The former mayor of Johannesburg was arrested in connection with a funeral insurance scam he ran in 2011. Gwamanda has maintained his innocence. His Al Jama-ah party also supported him. saying he was persecuted by the prosecutor.

Prosecutor welcomes Gwamanda’s dismissal

The Johannesburg prosecutor’s office welcomed Gwamanda’s removal, but added that it did not close that chapter.

“We can only imagine the damage caused by this individual both during his time as MMC for Community Development and in his short term as mayor,” the party said.

They demanded a full investigation into all the agreements and memorandums of understanding (MOUs) he signed during his tenure as mayor and MMC.

DA warns against replacing Gwamanda

While the party is happy that Gwamanda is gone, they have expressed concern about his replacement.

Morero appointed Patriotic Alliance councilor Nkoukou as the new MMC, but the DA also rejected this appointment.

“Cllr Nkoukou is known for his racist remarks on the council, this in a country as diverse as ours.

Gwamanda arrested for fraud

Previous News in brief reported how Councilor Al Jama-ah was arrested in connection with a funeral insurance scam.

Gwamanda was accused of taking people’s money and then faking his death when they wanted to claim it back.

He found out when a customer saw him on TV, where he was listed as the new mayor of Johannesburg.
