Clermont County community comes together to support car crash victim

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) – Four months after a Clermont County couple was seriously injured in a car accident, people are coming together to support them.

Jacob Demaris and his girlfriend Sabrina Deitz they were driving home in August when their pickup truck was hit by an SUV in Goshen Township. The driver of the SUV later died from his injuries, and it’s been a long recovery for the couple who have been together for almost four years.

“I know I was hit in the head. After that, I didn’t remember anything until I woke up in the hospital,” Jacob said.

The surgeries have prevented them from doing activities they enjoy, such as horseback riding.

“It’s hard when you can’t do the fun things you want to do, like riding, because you have to wait a year,” Deitz said. “You have to expect certain things. I think that’s just it. It’s hard.”

Jacob’s medical expenses were taking a toll on his mental health. To help with the cost, his mother, Patty Demaris, decided to host a benefit for him. Local businesses have donated raffle baskets to raise the money it needs to stay afloat.

“It was just stressful watching him go through it because there was nothing I could do,” Patty said. “Know that you have so many family and friends who want to help you. There are people I don’t even know who have donated to help him and I’m so thankful and grateful.”

Despite everything they’ve been through, the traumatic experience has made the couple stronger.

“He brought us closer,” Jacob said. “We care about each other and talk to each other more than three or four times a day.”

“He helps me if I need help getting in and out of vehicles and makes sure I’m okay if I need anything and I ask him things,” Deitz said. “We’ve just been going through it day by day and getting through it together.”

Both Deitz and Demaris had surgery for injuries sustained in the crash. Both said that while they are still recovering, they remain in good spirits.

There was no fundraising goal, but anyone interested in helping Jacob can do so by contacting Bean and Brew, the coffee shop that hosted the benefit.
