California winds ease as firefighters gain ground on wildfires

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters in Southern California gained ground Saturday on a wildfire that destroyed more than 100 structures as gusty winds eased with favorable weather expected through the weekend.

Evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings for residents in several areas of Ventura County, where the wildfire burned about 32 square miles (about 83 square kilometers) and was 21 percent contained, authorities said .

Firefighters were aided by lighter winds, mild temperatures and low humidity that allowed fuels to dry and burn quickly, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

“We had a very successful day with the favorable weather,” said Ventura County Fire Battalion Chief Nick Cleary.

The fire broke out Wednesday morning and exploded amid the arrival of dry, warm and gusty winds from northeast Santa Ana, forcing thousands of residents to flee and threatening 3,500 structures in suburban neighborhoods, farms and agricultural areas surrounding the community of Camarillo.

More than 100 structures were destroyed and another 25 were damaged, firefighters said Saturday, as inspection crews swept in to assess the impact. Agriculture officials, who assessed the toll on farmland seeded with avocados, citrus and berries, estimated the damage at $2.4 million, the Ventura County Star reported.

The smoky air hung over the area and was expected to linger for several days. Forecasters said weather conditions will remain favorable on Sunday and Monday, with cool temperatures and an onshore breeze.

Another round of northeast winds was expected Tuesday, but humidity was expected to rise and gusts were not expected to become as high as those that fueled the fire, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Walbrun.

The region northwest of Los Angeles has seen some of California’s most destructive wildfires over the years. The Mountain Fire quickly grew from less than half a square mile (about 1.2 square kilometers) to more than 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) in just over five hours Wednesday, with gusts of up to 61 mph (98 km/h).

Red flag warnings indicating high fire danger conditions have expired for most of the region on Thursday.

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Ventura County.
