The mayor-elect will declare a “fentanyl emergency” on Day 1 in San Francisco

Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie is the mayor-elect of San Francisco and has shared his plans to get to work quickly once in office.

Lurie gave his first speech as mayor-elect on Friday. Thursday night, London Breed, the city’s first black female mayor, acknowledged the race.

Our mandate is clear: deliver clean and safe streets, solve our drug and behavioral health crisis, shake up a corrupt bureaucracy, build housing our neighbors can afford, support our hardworking small businesses and revitalize downtown,” Lurie. distributed on X.

The Associated Press has not yet declared a winner in the race because thousands of ballots have yet to be counted and added to the ranked-choice voting tabulations.

However, with Breed behind, she promised a smooth transition as Lurie takes over as mayor.

Yesterday, I received a kind call from Mayor London Breed, who offered assistance during this transition. We are both committed to working together to prepare for the hard work ahead,” Lurie wrote on X.

In a brief news conference, Lurie shared plans to declare a fentanyl emergency on his first day in office in January, according to The New York Times.

Lurie shared his intention to shut down “open-air fentanyl markets” in the city and noted his disagreements with President-elect Donald Trump, while assuring he would not stop them from helping the city.

According to the Times, fentanyl is responsible for most of the 3,300 drug-related deaths reported in San Francisco since 2020.

Lurie spent nearly $9 million of his own money on his mayoral bid. It will be his first role in public office.
