10 stunning snaps from the Weather Photographer of the Year Awards

Ominous clouds, snow-kissed countryside and clashing seasons. This year’s winners Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year competition showcase the volatile beauty of our planet.

Photographer Gerson Turelly took home the inaugural Standard Chartered Climate Award competition, which was implemented to document the link between times patterns and the wider implications of climate change. Turelly’s photo (below) shows a kayak navigating the streets of Porto Alegre, Brazil, after destructive floods hit the area last spring.

Climate Award
This compelling image shows downtown Porto Alegre, Brazil, during the devastating floods of Rio Grande do Sul in the spring of 2024. In this image, a road has turned into a waterway as a young man paddles his kayak. Gerson noted that the kayak was heading to the hardest hit areas to help rescue stranded people.

The Royal Meteorological Society announced the winners, selected by a panel of experts in the fields of meteorology, photography and journalism. This year, the competition received entries from photographers from 84 countries.

“I am delighted with the variety and quality of this year’s winning photographs, which show a real window into the world’s weather and climate, both in regional differences and interconnectedness,” said judge and chief executive of the Royal Meteorological Society Liz Bentley . “From African dust impacting Athens to calm weather over volcanoes, from a sudden local downpour to heavy rainfall and flooding around the world, we are reminded that climate change is impacting weather patterns everywhere and that the global community must to unite. let’s act now and reduce any rise in temperature.”

“Sprites Dancing in the Dark Night”
The Standard Authorized Weather Photographer of 2024
As several storms broke out around Shanghai, Xin traveled to Chongming District, and after a few hours, a “faint red figure” flashed in their eyes, and this remarkable picture was captured. The judges commented that it is rare to see an image with this extent and sprite count.

“Circular Rainbow”
Smartphone Third place
Peter held his camera phone steady through a turbulent landing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to capture this full circular rainbow. Our judges raved about how the image “encapsulates the spirit of smartphone photography” in its opportunism. The circular rainbow would only have been there for a second and Peter captured it.

“Fire and Ice”
Young weather photographer Third place
Lincoln grabbed his camera and took this photo from his home in Austin, Texas, as a storm started to roll in. The Gulf of Mexico is warming rapidly due to climate change, increasing the supply of moist air and increasing the potential for intense storms in the region.

“Heaven of Frost”
The place of the main title
A spectacular display of frost over the Derwent Valley, UK. The judges loved the colors and light in Andy’s photo, as well as the sense of layering provided by the rolling hills, different types of trees and thin layers of fog. As one judge said, “The more you look at it, the more you see.”

“African Dust Over Athens”
Ranked place for smartphone
The influence of Saharan dust on Athens during April 2023 and is a reminder of the interconnectedness of weather conditions around the world, an aspect that particularly impressed the judges.

“The Promise of Saturated Earth and Sky
Young weather photographer in second place
A panoramic view of the Cuckmere Valley in East Sussex. The judging company noted how the photo appears to contain two seasons: summer on the left and autumn on the right. The beauty of the sky, contrasted with the floods on earth, is a reminder of both the wonder and the misery that heaven can bring.

Winner of the Standard Chartered Smartphone Weather Photographer of the Year
(The photographer) went out expecting to capture a sunrise, but was instead rewarded with this glorious view of the smoking volcanoes of East Java, Indonesia. The judging panel praised the subtlety of the photo, appreciating the combination of the curves of the landscape and the curves of the tree in the foreground with the pool of clouds and blue sky above.

“Rain Area”
Young Weather Photographer of the Year
The winning photo of (Windmann) captured this stunning shot during an outdoor performance Madame Butterfly on the eastern shore of Lake Constance (also known as Lake Constance) in Bregenz, Austria.
