At a vigil Thursday night, friends, family and neighbors poured out their grief and tried to lift their family through this time of tragedy.

At a tearful vigil, close friends of Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez said his charismatic personality and sense of duty will never be forgotten.

“He’s been there countless times for other people, so I feel like we owe it to him to lift him and his family up,” said attendee Carlos Martinez.

The vigil was followed by a liturgy at the Church of St. Nicholas of Tolentine in West Lawn, where the officer was known, respected and loved.

“He was such an amazing person, he had a big smile with his friends and he lit up the room,” said Francisco Gutierrez.

Martinez attended grade school and high school in the area, graduating from Hubbard High School in 2016.

A visitation service for Officer Martinez will be held Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in Chicago.

A GoFundMe has been launched to collect donations for the Martinez family.
