Democratic US Senator Jacky Rosen is re-elected in Nevada, securing a battleground seat

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada Democratic Senator Jacky Rosen won re-election, defeating Republican Sam Brown in a close but unusually quiet race for the battleground state.

The Associated Press declared Rosen the winner on Friday.

The first-term senator campaigned on abortion rights and positioned himself as a non-ideological politician, a formula that also worked for the state’s senior senator, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, in her own re-election bid two years ago .

Brown, a retired Army captain who moved to Nevada from Texas in 2018 and has never held elected office, tried unsuccessfully to fit President-elect Donald Trump’s powerful role in the labor state. He had Trump’s support in the Republican primary and won handily, but was heavily outmatched during the campaign, leaving Rosen to dominate the airwaves for months.

The AP left phone and email messages for comment Friday from both Rosen’s and Brown’s campaigns.

Rosen, a former Las Vegas-area synagogue president and computer programmer, has run ads portraying herself as an independent who doesn’t listen to “party leaders.”

She also highlighted her work in expanding broadband internet access and helping to connect Las Vegas with Southern California via light rail.

And she called out Brown for his opposition to abortion rights, saying she would support a national abortion ban despite Brown’s statements that he respects Nevada voters’ choice decades ago to legalize abortions.

A vote measure this year which would enshrine the right to abortion in the adopted state constitution. Voters must approve it again in 2026 to amend the constitution.

The Senate race drew relatively little national interest for most of the campaign, a stark contrast to the presidential race as both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris targeted the state and its six electoral votes. Conservative money poured in in recent days as the GOP posted a strong record early in the period, but Brown couldn’t fully fight back.

Analysts note that Nevada has a history of supporting no-nonsense senators who provide funding from Washington.

Brown, who received a Purple Heart for his service in Afghanistan, was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device there in 2008 and underwent 30 surgeries while recovering. In campaign ads, he repeatedly mentioned that his face remains heavily scarred from the attack.

He is also the founder of a medical company that serves veterans.

Brown previously made an unsuccessful bid in 2022 for the Republican nomination to take on Cortez Masto.

All four Nevada American House Clerks — three Democrats and one Republican — also won re-election this year.
