Hot weekend ahead as Rafael fades

WWSB ABC7 News at 5 p.m

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – With high pressure continuing to dominate our weather, expect to see a nice weekend, albeit a warm one. Temperatures will be 4-7 degrees above average until Tuesday next week. We are looking at a weak cold front that may move through the area by Wednesday next week.

We’ll see some additional moisture as a tropical wave moves into our area on Monday, bringing just the chance for a few showers, mainly late in the day, Veterans Day through Tuesday. We’ll see highs in the mid-80s Monday through Wednesday and then in the low 80s Thursday and Friday.

In the tropics, we continue to see Rafael being buffeted by strong shear, dry air and cooler water temperatures in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to weaken over the weekend and become a lingering tropical depression or low pressure system into early next week. It looks like it could disappear without hitting any land over the western Gulf Coast states or Mexico.

The system we tracked near Puerto Rico is battling dry air and wind shear, also reducing the chance of development to 10 percent as it moves west at 10-15 mph. The GFS is once again suggesting a near low or possibly developing tropical system in the southern Caribbean late next week, but the other models aren’t showing anything right now. We’ll have to wait and see about that next week.

For sailors, look for easterly winds at 10-15 knots and 2-3 foot seas with a moderate bend on the waters for the weekend. Beach weather looks great.
