Rape survivor lawyer who helped KIYC inquiry dies aged 51

News 12 New Jersey remembers a sexual assault survivor advocate who contributed to Kane In Your Corner’s “Victims of the System” investigation.

News 12 has learned that Natasha Alexenko, a voice for rape and sexual assault survivors through her organization Natasha’s Justice Project, has died at the age of 51.

Alexenko became a lawyer after surviving a rape while a student and returning to her apartment. Her rape kit was not tested for 10 years. She says this experience motivated her to advocate for other survivors.

“So many people have come into my life through this process of becoming a survivor and have kind of helped lay the groundwork for how I can take my story and use it to help others,” Alexenko previously said to News 12. “And again, like it’s a symbiotic relationship where I can help others and they help me, bringing me joy and sharing their hopes and dreams.”

In a special investigation by News 12 New Jersey, Kane In Your Corner revealed how thousands of rape kits went untested in the state, even though survivors wanted them tested.

The investigation prompted state lawmakers to introduce a bill that would require testing of all rape kits.
