Malaysia among safest in South Asia with low workplace injury rate, survey finds

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — Malaysia ranks favorably for workplace safety in Southeast Asia, with only 7 percent of the current workforce reporting injuries in the past two years, according to Reuters. Global Risk Survey 2024.

The report, based on nearly 147,000 interviews conducted globally by Gallup in 2023, points out that Malaysia’s self-reported workplace injury rate is relatively low.

This puts Malaysia below the regional average of 18% and in line with regions reporting more stable or declining workplace injury rates.

“Southeast Asia remains stable in terms of workplace injury rates,” the report notes, highlighting Malaysia’s strong position in the regional rankings.

Globally, 18% of the workforce – around 667 million adults – reported experiencing a serious injury at work, with the highest rates often in low- and middle-income countries, according to the Lloyd’s Foundation Register.

Malaysia’s results suggest that it performs better than many regions in managing occupational safety and health.

In higher-income regions such as Australia and New Zealand, workplace injury rates have increased, which the report links to occupational health challenges varying by income level and sector.

The findings also indicate a link between workplace injury and workers’ concern for safety, with those who have experienced a workplace injury more likely to express concern about future risks.
