Does the map show Trump’s 2024 reelection victory with red and blue counties?

Claim:

A red and blue colored map accurately shows county-by-county results in the 2024 US presidential election.

Rating:

Mostly true

Context

As of this writing, on November 8, 2024, officials have not yet projected the outcome of some counties. In those cases, the color red or blue was the leading candidate. In addition, we noticed at least three possible mistakes — a small number of discrepancies in more than 3,100 counties. Also, Alaska and Hawaii were omitted from the map.

On November 7, 2024, US President-elect Donald Trump POSTED (archived) on Truth Social an image of a map showing US counties, each displaying either a red or blue color. Red — the color associated with the Republican Party that dominates the landscape of the map — would have represented Trump’s county-by-county victories in the 2024 presidential election leading up to him. re-election. Meanwhile, the blue regions marked individual victories for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

It is true that the map represented the counties where Trump and Harris won, with very few exceptions. As of this writing on November 8, officials have not yet projected the outcome of some counties. In those cases, the color red or blue was the leading candidate.

I noticed three possible problems with the map, although out of more than 3,100 counties the discrepancy seemed small: Center Daily Times reported that unofficial results for Pennsylvania’s Center County — which appears red on the map — showed that “voters favored Kamala Harris and kept the county blue for five straight presidential elections.” The New York Times wrote that Harris drove into Lehigh County in Pennsylvania, which appeared on the map as red. Also, the Naugatuck Valley Planning Region (a county equivalent in Connecticut)—appearing in blue—should according to reports instead, display as red for Trump.

In addition, Alaska and Hawaii were not included on the map. A number of counties in Mississippi have been shaded in gray, likely indicating they did not report results when the map was created.

In our research, we discovered that Reddit user u/ajmeko POSTED image of the Nov. 6 map, captioning it “A mostly complete map of counties in the 2024 presidential election.” We’ve reached out to the user to ask if he created the map, and we’ll update this story if we hear back.

A Reddit commenter said under the post, “Yes, it’s basically a population density map of the US. I know people say ‘the earth doesn’t vote,’ but gosh** if it ain’t crazy to watch yet.”

Other users also mentioned the same phrase “the earth doesn’t vote” and referenced Trump’s projected victory to the popular vote. One person said: “The land doesn’t vote” – every Redditor. But it didn’t matter in this election. Trump still won the popular vote.” Another person also commented, “Earth doesn’t vote, people do. But this time fewer people voted blue and more people voted red.”

We will update this story if we notice or receive information about any other discrepancies in the map.
