Three people charged with drug trafficking following OPP search warrant in Marathon

MARATHON, MR – On November 7, 2024, a collaborative Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) operation in Marathon resulted in drug trafficking charges against three individuals following a search warrant executed on Howe Street. Members of the Marathon OPP, Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and the OPP Emergency Response Team conducted the search and seized a suspected quantity of cocaine, methamphetamine and other items believed to be related to criminal activity.

Details of charges and accused persons

During the search, law enforcement seized controlled substances and various items related to alleged trafficking operations. The accused persons face several charges under Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and Criminal Code of Canada.

Joshua BEDARD, 40, of Marathon, Ontario

Joshua Bedard was charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine: This charge is set out in section 5(2) of the CDSA, where trafficking or possession with intent to traffic a Schedule I substance such as methamphetamine can result in imprisonment, with maximum sentences of life imprisonment depending on the seriousness of the case.
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine (two counts): Trafficking or possession for the purpose of trafficking involving cocaine can result in sentences of up to life in prison.
  • Possession of firearms or ammunition contrary to prohibition order: Breaching a banning order under section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon: Under section 91(2) of the Penal Code, unauthorized possession of weapons can lead to imprisonment for up to five years.
  • Possession of unmarked cigarettes: While usually a violation of provincial regulations, penalties can include fines and, in some cases, jail time if associated with other criminal charges.

Jacques BEDARD, 64, and Gertrude WALSH, 64, Both of Marathon, Ontario

Jacques Bedard and Gertrude Walsh were each charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine (two points)
  • Possession of unmarked cigarettes

Next steps in legal proceedings

All three accused have been released from custody with conditions and are due to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Marathon on January 22, 2025.
