The “4B Movement” is trending after Trump’s victory. what is it

After the former president Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States this week, many women took to social media to express their fears and frustrations about what a second Trump presidency would mean for women’s rights. Many women on TikTok specifically supported the idea of joining the “4B movement” in response to his win.

One post from a TikTok user said she broke up with her Republican boyfriend after election night and plans to join 4B. The post has garnered nearly 2 million “likes” on the app.

“I’m doing my part as an American woman by breaking up with my Republican boyfriend last night and officially joining the 4b movement this morning,” she wrote in the video’s caption.

Another TikTok user said in a viral video that she believes the Democratic nominee, vice president Kamala Harrishe would have won the presidency if he had been a man.

“You all hate women so bad,” she said, writing “4b movement doams” in the caption of the post.

Both TikTok posts are part of a wave of post-election social media posts promoting the idea of a certain women’s rights movement that has emerged in South Korea.

What is the 4B movement?

The “4B” group, which advocates a no-marriage position, began around 2018 with the goal of rejecting gender norms that have historically and systemically exploited women.

The group’s name comes from women separating themselves from men into four categories, all of which begin with the letter B in Korean: bihon, bichulsan, biyeonae, and bisekseu. The list translates to: no dating, no sex, no marriage and no raising children.

Why did it start?

For years, feminist movements in South Korea have worked to fight against various forms of gender inequality, such as wage gapsgender violence (incl the country’s spy camera porn epidemic) and male-centered standards of beauty which put extreme pressure on women. Women in South Korea have also increasingly rejected traditional expectations of motherhood in part because misogynistic views about the burden of care that is often placed on women, among other factors.

The country was fight a demographic crisiswith record low birth rates for years.

The “4B Movement” emerged specifically in South Korea amid a feminist movement in the late 2010s to early 2020s, according to Jung Hawon, journalist and author of “Flowers of Fire: The Inside Story of South Korea’s Feminist Movement and What It Means for Women’s Rights Around the World.”

Jung explained to YouTuber Elliot Sang in June, there was “a lot of momentum” for the “4B” trend when it came out. For example, South Korean YouTuber Jung Se-young, who promoted the “4B movement”, told Reuters in 2020 that she vowed to remain single because “marriage is the root cause of patriarchy in South Korea.”

During Jung’s YouTube interview with Sang, she said the 4B movement and its followers represent “an extreme end of a whole spectrum of women who remain single and childless in South Korea.”

But despite its original popularity, Jung also said that she believes more recent waves of anti-feminism in South Korea they “intimidated” some women in the country. “Many of them have been silent, including followers of the 4B Movement. It’s a really disheartening development.”

Why is 4B trending in the US?

There has been a surge of interest in the 4B movement since Trump defeated Harris in Tuesday’s election.

Many women on social media are expressing their concern the future of reproductive rights and slamming men who voted against policies aimed at protecting women and their bodily autonomy.

They are also worried about their safety in a second Trump administration. On Wednesday, far-right social media users on X shared their unfiltered, misogynistic celebrations of the former president’s re-election: “Your body, my choice. Forever,” a far-right political pundit posted on the platform ― a phrase that has since spread online. (Other grotesque and threatening tweets insinuation men can now control women followed.)

As a result, some are turning to the ideals of the 4B movement as a response.

“I love #4BMovement’s new idea about not interacting or talking to men whenever we can,” one person wrote on X, former Twitter. “It sounds so peaceful. We can only ignore and block. Let the loneliness epidemic spread.”

The movement also encourages women to lift up other women more intentionally.

“We remind you that the 4B movement, and the separatist movement in general, is not only about avoiding men, but also about supporting and investing in women,” he wrote another. “Look for relationships with women, women-owned businesses, media created by women, etc; surround yourself with women and our culture.”

But others online said some of the recent talk about the 4B movement in the US doesn’t recognize the modalities different demographics of women and men, voted in the elections.

Most conversations operate under a blanket statement that most men have voted against women’s best interests—and that women have generally voted in favor of those interests. But voting demographics tell a clearer story. National exit polls suggest Harris received support from about 91 percent of black voters and about 60 percent of Latino voters. She received about 77% of the black male vote, conformable Reuters.

Trump, however, won about 56% of the white vote: 60% of white men and 53% of white women.

“On the ballot black people are the most unified group in the country,” wrote one user X, adding: “Our people are not the ones who voted against us and our humanity, it was theirs.”

Black women don’t need to get involved in the 4B movement. Voting, blacks are the most unified group in the country. We must support each other and grow our population and community. Our people are not the ones who voted against us and our humanity, that was theirs.

Other people on X pointed out that simply giving up on men after Trump’s victory doesn’t address it white women’s voting block, which often has voted for Republican candidates.

“The 4B movement is good and important, and I’m glad people are talking about it, but I need white women to keep the energy going when they unleash white supremacy on themselves and their peers. Statistically, a black man is a better ally for me than a white woman.” said one user.
