A group driving recklessly on homemade minibikes in downtown Portland has been arrested, police say

A group of homemade bikers riding recklessly through downtown Portland were stopped and arrested last night, the Portland Police Bureau says.

Officers monitoring downtown for the Nov. 6 demonstrations saw a group of bikers doing “burnouts” in Pioneer Courthouse Square shortly after 9 p.m.

Officers responded immediately, and the minibike riders eluded police northbound on Southwest 6th Avenue, running a red light.

The air support unit monitored the group from above and spotted them riding into the Old Town neighborhood, over the Burnside Bridge, then into a gas station parking lot at Southeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Southeast Alder Street.

The police moved in and arrested 7 people. All were booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on the listed charges:

  • Stanley J. Hawes, 27, Reckless driving, attempting to elude police with a vehicle
  • Dakota S. Van Syoc, 25: Reckless driving
  • Jacob D. Sollers, 38, Reckless Driving
  • Kyle M. Kutz, 32, Reckless Driving
  • Lathan T. Nagle, 27, Reckless Driving
  • Dwight E. Guthrie, 27, Reckless Driving
  • Brandon J. McAndrew, 31, Reckless Driving

A rider left his bike behind, ran off and was not immediately located. Eight minibikes were confiscated by the police and towed away. All appeared to be homemade bikes with small engines, no license plates and no required lighting, police said

One officer injured his hand during the arrests. He was treated and released from the hospital and is expected to be out of work for about a week.
