Emigrate vs. Immigrants: what’s the difference?

Although they might look and sound the same, there is a difference between “emigrate” and “immigrate,” and that difference is whether you are coming or leaving.

Both words mean that someone leaves from one country to another, writes Britannicawhich defines immigrating to come TO a country to live in there.” Emigration, meanwhile, is defined as leaving the country you are in FROM to live elsewhere. And it is those key words, “to” and “from” that separate immigrate and emigrate, according to the Grammar.

For example, an American citizen immigrating TO Canada. They immigrated FROM United States of America. You can use this trick, Grammarly writes, to catch the difference.

There is an “i” at the beginning of immigration which you can pair with the word “in” as in moving in another country. The letter “e” is at the beginning of emigration, which can be associated with the word “exit”, as in leaving your home country, for example, Canada.
