Alberta’s unemployment rate was little changed last month.

Statistics Canada released its October 2024 Labor Force Survey on Friday, which showed Alberta’s unemployment rate fell by two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.3 per cent.

In October, Alberta had the third-highest unemployment of any Canadian province, behind only Prince Edward Island (10 percent) and Newfoundland and Labrador (10.1 percent).

Statistics Canada says employment in Alberta rose by 13,000 (+0.5%) in October, the second increase in three months.

The Labor Force Survey also noted that the proportion of people living in households experiencing financial hardship in Alberta (31.3 per cent) was above the Canadian average.

Edmonton had the second highest unemployment rate of the 36 cities surveyed nationally at 8.6 per cent, down significantly from nine per cent the previous month. Only Windsor, Ont. has a higher unemployment rate of 8.8 percent.

Calgary’s unemployment rate rose to 7.7 per cent in October from 7.4 per cent in September.

The unemployment rate in Lethbridge was largely unchanged at 5.2% in October, compared to 5.1 the previous month.

At the national level, Canada’s unemployment rate it was 6.5% in October.

The Labor Force Survey examined the week of November 10-16.
