Cable news saw a steep decline in viewership on election night

from Tuesday presidential elections provided further evidence that network television is in decline as a news source as viewers increasingly turn to streaming and digital platforms.

According to Nielsen, an estimated 42.3 million viewers watched the prime-time coverage election results between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump on 18 television networks on Tuesday — including CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC and PBS, to name a few.

That was a staggering 25 percent drop from 2020. In that election, 56.9 million viewers tuned into the network’s prime-time coverage to find out the results of the contest between Trump and President Biden.

Such is the beleaguered state of TV news that even the good news for the networks hasn’t been all that good.

For example, MSNBC beat rival CNN on a presidential election night for the first time in its history. But hold the confetti and champagne: MSNBC’s 5.5 million viewers on Tuesday was a significant drop from 2020, when it drew 7.3 million viewers, according to the data. deadline. CNN fared even worse, falling from 9.6 million viewers in 2020 to 4.7 million viewers on Tuesday.

Fox News Channel drew 9.8 million viewers from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM Tuesday, leading the cable news universe, according to Deadline. Nothing new about it. But that win was qualified at best, as it represented a substantial drop from 2020, when Fox’s audience was nearly 14 million.
