Maricopa County Board of Supervisors: Who Runs 5 Races?

PHOENIX — Two Maricopa County Board of Supervisors races remain too close to call, while the other three contests are up for grabs.

Four of the five supervisor seats have been held by Republicans for years.

However, Democrats are pushing to flip two of the seats during the 2024 election, which would give them control of the powerful governing body for Arizona’s most populous county.

In District 3, Republican Kate Brophy McGee edged out Democrat Daniel Valenzuela Thursday night and holds a 50.4 percent-49.5 percent lead (2,608 votes), according to data. Maricopa County Results Released just before 11 a.m. Friday.

Republican Bill Gates did not seek re-election to the seat.

Meanwhile, Mark Stewart increased his lead in the District 1 race after unseating Supervisor Jack Sellers in July’s Republican primary. Stewart led Joel Navarro 51.9%-48.1%, though Sellers endorsed the Democrat.

Navarro was leading when the first batch of results came in an hour after polls closed Tuesday night, but Stewart took the lead after election day in-person vote totals were released.

How are the other Maricopa County Board of Supervisors races going?

The two incumbents who made it to the general election were up for re-election: Thomas Galvin, a Republican, and Steve Gallardo, the board’s only current Democrat.

Galvin held a 58.5%-41.4% lead over challenger Julie Cieniawski in District 2, and Gallardo led Ann Niemann 64.5%-35.4% in District 5.

Galvin declared victory Wednesday afternoon on social media.

Meanwhile, Republican U.S. Rep. Debbie Lesko, who did not seek re-election to Congress, is running to succeed Supervisor Clint Hickman, who did not seek re-election in District 4. Lesko led Democrat David Sandoval 60.1%-39 .8 % and declared victory wednesday morning
