America’s last true Bellwether county got the election result wrong

The nation’s last true county has lost its status after electing the wrong candidate in a presidential election for the first time in nearly half a century.

Heading into Tuesday’s election, Clallam County, population 78,000 in northwest Washington, had the longest record in the country for correctly choosing the winner.

It has been correct for 11 consecutive elections since Ronald Reagan defeated the current Democratic president. Jimmy Carter by a landslide in 1980.

But the winning streak ended this year when voters chose the vice president Kamala Harris by a margin of over eight points—only to find it Republican opponent Donald Trump she was declared the winner on Wednesday morning.

According to Clallam County’s unofficial results from Tuesday’s election, Harris got about 52.9 percent of the vote, while Trump got 44.4 percent.

About 22,042 ballots were cast for Harris, while 18,504 were cast for Trump, out of a total of 41,943 ballots.

That didn’t reflect the result nationally — forecasters had predicted Trump had secured victories in enough battleground states to surpass the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency by Wednesday morning.

Although votes are still being counted in some states, Trump also leads the popular vote. As of 2:45 PM ET Friday afternoon, he leads by more than 4.3 million votes nationwide.

Marc Abshire, director of the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce and a Harris supporter, said Los Angeles Times that he was proud that Clallam County supported the Democratic ticket this year.

“But also disappointed that we’re losing our favorite status because of this,” he told the paper. “Here, we just didn’t have the grievance vote that most of the rest of the country seemed to have.”

Clallam County has supported the losing candidate only three times in the past 100 years: in 1968, when voters favored Democrat Hubert Humphrey over Richard Nixon, and in 1976, when voters chose Republican Gerald. I seeover winner Carter in 2024 as well.

But the county has turned blue in recent local, state and federal elections, as Northwest Public Broadcasting recently noted.

Although the county supported the winning candidate in every contest between 1980 and 2020, Republicans won six times and Democrats five times — the outcome of the recent election was decided by narrow margins.

chairman Joe Biden won the county by about 3 percentage points in 2020, and Trump won the county by a similar margin in 2016. In 2012, former President Barack Obama won by a margin of about 0.4 percentage points.
