Man, 37, dead after shooting on Montclair Avenue on South Side | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN – A 37-year-old man was killed in a 2 a.m. homicide today in the 2200 block of Montclair Avenue on the South Side.

Police were called to that area because a man had been shot. When they arrived, Youngstown police officers and ambulance personnel began life-saving measures, but the man died, according to a Youngstown police news release.

Youngstown police detectives, the police department’s crime scene unit and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office arrived to investigate, which is being treated as a homicide, the release said.

The police department is asking that anyone in the area at the time of the shooting contact the police department at 330-742-8973 or Crime Stoppers at 330-746-2583 with information or tips, which can be left anonymously.

No arrests have been made in the crime.

The homicide is the city’s 19th this year, the latest being the Oct. 18 death of Reynaldo Hernandez, 24, who was found shot to death that day on Liberty Road near Wardle Avenue on Youngstown’s East. Side in Mount Hope Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery area.

A Youngstown police report suggests Hernandez was shot on Bott Street, not far from where his body was found on the East Side.

Six men were indicted last week in connection with Hernandez’s murder. They are Andre K. Bailey, 40; Vincent Marbley, 59; and Eddie Winphrie, 41, who were indicted on two counts each of aggravated murder with a weapon specification and one count of aggravated robbery with a weapon specification, tampering with evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Three other men were indicted on other charges in the case. They are Daniel Ramsey, 43, of New Castle, Pa., for involuntary manslaughter with a weapon and tampering with evidence; Shawn Jones, 35, for one count of tampering with evidence; and Richard W. Lightner, 40, for one count of tampering with evidence.

The homicide before that occurred a day earlier — Oct. 17 — when George Grays, 62, was found shot to death at 1:31 a.m. inside a vehicle parked on the street in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue. on the North Side. He was shot multiple times and police are ruling his death a homicide.

Officers removed the man from the vehicle and performed life-saving measures, but he died, according to a Youngstown police news release.

Excluding two Youngstown officer-involved homicides this year, Youngstown has had 19 homicides this year. The city had 22 homicides in 2023.
