David Gilmour tackles the dark side of the moon and the Wizard of Oz theory

David Gilmour was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night (November 7), where the legendary Pink Floyd the singer-guitarist was asked by the late night host about the long-running theory involving the album The dark side of the moon and the movie The Wizard of Oz.

Due to the “Dark Side of the Rainbow” theory first widely published in a 1995 article by Charles Savage in The Fort Wayne Journalit is believed that if you start The dark side of the moon just as the MGM lion roars at the beginning The Wizard of Ozthe music synchronizes almost perfectly with the scenes from the classic film.

This led some people to believe that Pink Floyd intentionally recorded the 1973 album to sync up with the 1939 film, a question Fallon asked Gilmour during his appearance on The Tonight Show.

“Well, of course it was,” Gilmour joked at first, before revealing that he and his wife, Polly Samson, had tried it. “Polly and I listened to it years ago,” the rock icon continued, before Fallon asked again if the band planned it on purpose, to which Gilmour replied: “No. I only heard about it years later.”

Gilmour then added, “Someone said you set the needle…and at the third roar of the MGM lion, you set the needle for its beginning. The dark side and there are these weird synchronicities that happen.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer went on to admit, “There are these strange coincidences.”

Fallon then joked that maybe if fans sing Gilmour’s new solo album, Lucky and weirdwhile watching the new movie Riverthe same kind of synchronicities would occur, to which Gilmour exclaimed, “Who knows?”

Elsewhere in the interview, Gilmour said whether his famous cough from the song “Wish You Were Here” prompted him to quit smoking. He also discussed his early days as a male model.
