Which states had the strongest support for Trump or Harris?

If there’s one takeaway from Election Night, it’s that support for President-elect Donald Trump has grown dramatically since 2020 — both in traditionally Republican strongholds and in historically Democratic states.

The Trump campaign improved its display in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. Vice President Kamala Harris failed to better President Biden’s 2020 numbers in any contest except for Washington (up 0.5 percentage points) and the District of Columbia (up 0.3 percentage points). Harris also gained ground in Utah, where ballots are still being counted, but Trump still won the state with about 60 percent of the vote.

In 13 states, Trump secured more than 60 percent of the vote — a feat matched by Harris in just three. Vermont and Massachusetts were the two states with the highest share of the Democratic vote Tuesday, with 64.4 percent and 61.3 percent, respectively, followed by Maryland with 60.2 percent. But even with many ballots still to be counted, and with many closed races yet to be decidedthe results so far clearly point to a shift to the right being felt across the country – one that could have wide-ranging implications for everything from reproductive health care TO grocery store prices.

The strongest support for Trump came in Wyoming, where he won 72.3 percent of the vote. The map below shows by what margin each candidate won or carried each state as of noon Thursday.

For most of the country, a key issue for voters was the economy. That was just as true for Wyoming and West Virginia — both of which gave Trump more than 70 percent of the vote — as in traditional Democratic strongholds in the Northeast.

Harris carried both New York and New Jersey, but by much slimmer margins than Biden in 2020. In New Jersey, the Democratic vote share fell by nearly 6 percentage points, from 57.3% in 2020 to 51 .5% in 2024. And in his former home state of New York, Trump won by 6.5 points, jumping from 37.7% in 2020 to 44.2% this week.

Even in Maryland, where more than 60 percent of voters favored Harris, the returns showed a serious drop from the 65.4 percent of the vote that Biden won in 2020.

New England, one of the safest Democratic areas in the nation, also showed increased enthusiasm for Trump. New Englanders, like voters across the country, were particularly concerned with the economy.

In Massachusetts-a deep blue, Harris lost ground with voterswinning just 61.3% of the vote, compared to Biden’s share of 65.6% in 2020. Communities such as Acushnet, Middleborough and Carver, where Trump won in 2020saw support for him rise sharply in 2024. Other cities, such as Saugus and Athol, went from Biden in 2020 to Trump in 2024.

In Rhode Island, Trump’s 42% of the vote was enough to secure it the best performance by a Republican since 1988. And in New Hampshire, Trump’s strong performance of 48.2 percent — by 3 percentage points of Harris — it only cemented its reputation as a purple state.
