Intel could bring new budget GPUs in the form of the original 2nd generation Arc graphics cards, known as Battlemage, as soon as December.

VideoCardz have become aware of a new rumor about the Battlemage range, as leaked by regular leaker Golden Pig Upgrade (or GPU – see what they did there?) on Weibo.

We’re told (via translation) that the Battlemage desktop graphics cards are coming next month, and the linker’s hope is that they’ll perform “brilliantly” no less. Something might get lost in translation there, perhaps, but this is most likely just a hope rather than a prediction.

It’s a hope we all share, of course, because the lower end of the graphics card market could very well be blown.

If you’re familiar with the long-running Battlemage rumors, you’ll probably recall that Intel was only expected to produce entry-level 2nd-gen Arc GPUs and nothing above the budget space. Still, if these are killer budget GPUs – fingers crossed – or even decent ones, they’ll be very welcome.

Analysis: Start AMD and Nvidia on the pass?

As always, this is just a rumor and may not amount to anything, but this grapevine nugget is supported by other recent speculation. The previous leak from Weibo indicated a Battlemage release before the end of 2024 (complete with significant generational growth, we should note) and Intel is already working on the third generation Celestial graphics. Another rumor that VideoCardz points out even suggests a November release.

All that said, it was a consistency thread of rumours previously that the new generation Arc graphics cards it may not appear until early 2025.

Intel may be stepping things up, though, and aiming for a December launch to achieve its own hype with fewer headwinds — rather than competing with the hype of AMD and Nvidiawhose next generation releases are coming at CES 2025 if the rumors are correct. Why wait until early 2025 when you can get in first and promote Battlemage more effectively this way?

That could mean a paper release, possibly – without much stock available – but we’re moving forward here. Even in this scenario, it will still be very interesting to see what Intel has planned for Battlemage, because as mentioned, the budget sector of the GPU market is in dire need of rejuvenation.

Nvidia puts no effort into the bottom space and AMD’s budget RDNA 3 offerings – the RX 7400 and 7300 – haven’t even appeared yet (and it seems highly unlikely that they will at this point).

We could use more good Budget GPU options at the more affordable end of the market – the RX 6600 seems a bit tired and over-relied on at the moment – so let’s hope the latest murmurs of an earlier Battlemage release are on the money.
