Rory McIlroy puts PGA Tour on red alert with latest comments

Rory McIlroy revealed exactly which PGA Tour events it plans to skip in 2025.

McIlroy, 35, explained ahead of September’s BMW PGA Championship that he wants to dramatically reduce his playing schedule next year.

Playing the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi this week, it is the 26th event of the season.

He will also play the DP World Tour Championship before taking a break over Christmas.

Going forward, McIlroy plans to play 18-20 times a year.

In 2025, he said Telegraph Sports that he is thinking of skipping:

He told him paper: “There are some tournaments that I’ve played this year that I don’t usually play and I might not play next year.

“For example, we played the Cognizant (Classic) in Palm Beach Gardens (formerly the Honda Classic), San Antonio (Texas Open) and Hilton Head (RBC Heritage).

“And I probably won’t play the first playoff event in Memphis (FedEx St. Jude). I mean, we basically finished dead last this year (tied for 68th out of 70) and only dropped one spot in the playoffs. ranking”.

He added: “Well, at this point in my career… Hey, I’m 35 years old and I’ve been here 17, 18 years, so I’m only going to go to the places I like and play. good

“Look, I’ve done the hard work, I’ve done this kind of 25 to 30 events a year. And I’m not getting any younger.”

Skipping the Cognizant Classic isn’t really a surprise, given its position in the program.

It is played in late February and would allow McIlroy more time to prepare for the coveted Players in preparation for the majors.

But skipping the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head may raise a few eyebrows considering it’s a signature event.

McIlroy usually tends to skip The Sentry every January and it would mean that in 2025 he will miss two of eight signature events.

The Northern Irishman lobbied for the $20 million tournaments alongside Tiger Woods at the height of the LIV Golf row.

Previously it was a stipulation that it was a requirement for golfers to play signature events if they qualified.

McIlroy skipped the RBC Heritage in 2022 after a disastrous performance at the Masters, which resulted in a huge fine.

The stipulation has now been removed.
