It happened between Ashburton and Lion Park late on Thursday afternoon.

Doctors from ALS Paramedics are among the emergency services on the scene.

Spokesman Garrith Jamieson says members of the Msunduzi fire department had to free the three victims from the car they were in.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that a car, an SUV and a truck had collided. The two vehicles allegedly collided on the road leading to Pietermaritzburg before the SUV lost control and veered across the center median and collided head-on with a truck.

“Unfortunately, three occupants, all male, of the SUV were severely trapped in the wreckage with life-threatening injuries. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. Another driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.”
