I-40 and I-25 were closed due to severe winter weather

New Mexico’s two major interstates — Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 — are closed Thursday due to a winter storm.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — New Mexico’s two major interstates — Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 — are closed Thursday due to a winter storm.

I-40 is closed at Clines Corners and westbound lanes are closed at Tucumcari due to severe winter weather. As a result of this closure, US 285 southbound is also closed at mile marker 290, one mile south of I-25 near Santa Fe. Northbound US 285 traffic will be detoured onto southbound I-25 due to a closure on that road.

I-25 northbound is closed from mile marker 339, just north of Las Vegas, to mile marker 460 through Raton Pass. I-25 southbound is also closed at mile marker 460.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, law enforcement has closed the road due to weather causing unsafe travel conditions.

“As I said, we borrowed equipment from other districts to help out. Mainly District 3 in Albuquerque, but they will be there and all districts will be going in 12-hour shifts,” said NMDOT Public Information Officer James Murray.

NMDOT warns that other roads may be packed with snow and ice and that crews may be salting and sanding. I also advise you to drive with caution and stay behind the snow plows at least 50 feet.

In northeastern New Mexico, US Highway 56 is closed from Springer to the Texas state line — a stretch of 94 miles. US 64 is also closed from mile marker 350, one mile east of Raton, to mile marker 430 in Clayton.

The problems in these areas are snow and icy roads and zero visibility due to blizzard conditions. Travel is discouraged.

Here’s what I-25 at Springer and US 64 at Capulin looked like just after 10 a.m. Thursday:
