The new White House administration could have an impact on the DOJ’s investigation of Phoenix police

Big change is coming at the White House, but the impact will be felt nationwide, including right here in Phoenix.

A new administration means a new Attorney General will be in place.

During President Trump’s first term, Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote a memorandum urging the DOJ to take extra caution when entering into consent decrees like the one upheld in Phoenix.

Some Phoenix leaders say federal oversight isn’t necessary. Others say it’s crucial.

Phoenix City Councilman Kevin Robinson says the future of the DOJ investigation and consent decree order for Phoenix police is not a factor in the future of local police.

“I don’t think there’s anything at stake,” Phoenix City Councilman Robinson said.

“Nothing is going to change. If the new administration comes in and they don’t focus on police reform and that particular area, we still see problems. We know we have citizens in Phoenix who have concerns about how we police.”

Robinson says recent signs of improvement within the department include increased training, a revamped use-of-force policy and the release of body cameras in investigations.

“There are very few police departments in the United States that do this in the timeframe that the city of Phoenix and the Phoenix Police Department do and what it does is it shows the people, it shows the citizens of Phoenix the force that under what circumstances they use police officers,” he added.

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Taylor had a different perspective on accountability and transparency from the Phoenix PD.

“Of course, the city of Phoenix will try to cover itself by saying they’re doing what they have to do. But if you ask people in the community – people who were brutalized by the Police Department – we sued Sometimes it’s hard to get public records when you sue them. It’s hard to get information when you sue them.

In response to the idea that taxpayer money is being wasted on a consent decree, Taylor said fewer lawsuits filed against the department would benefit taxpayers’ pockets and that there is too much at stake for the community to drop the investigation now.

“For them to say we’re going to change, they’ve had years of change and nothing happened and that’s why the Department of Justice stepped in to make sure that change was going to happen, but if the new administration comes in and takes back the Report, s -we may never see change with the Phoenix Police Department,” Taylor said.

Some potential attorney general picks under Trump’s second administration include Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, Texas AG Ken Paxton and Matt Whitiker, who served as acting AG for a year during Trump’s first term.

We’ll continue to follow the latest on cabinet picks and the implications for local and state issues here in Arizona.
