Old man Novato’s scammer has been sentenced to prison

A Placer County man arrested in an investigation into the theft of an elderly man in Novato has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, according to the Marin County Prosecutor’s Office.

Volodymyr Pipskyy, 41, of Roseville was arrested in February on charges of wire fraud against an 88-year-old resident. The victim was convinced to withdraw $50,000 “to fix a bogus ‘data breach,'” according to the Novato Police Department.

The victim’s supporters contacted police, who placed the victim’s home under surveillance and detained Pipskyy when he arrived to pick up money, the department said.

Prosecutors charged Pipskyy with grand theft and conspiracy. He accepted a plea deal and admitted to the conspiracy charge in September. No one else has been charged in the case.

Pipskyy turned himself in to the Marin County Jail on Nov. 1 to serve his sentence.
