Deadly hit-and-run suspect surrenders after Monument collapse

MONUMENT, Colo. (KKTV) – A man surrendered to authorities after a fatal accident in Monument.

The accident happened on Monday in the parking lot of a McDonald’s east of I-25 near Baptist Road. When authorities arrived, they found 47-year-old Kristy Kerst. Kerst was given medical aid, but she died. The Monument Police Department requested assistance from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.

A suspicious photo has been shared with the public, showing a man behind the wheel and a female passenger. On Thursday, the sheriff’s office provided an update on the case.

“Yesterday, 41-year-old Joel Lang turned himself in at the Stetson Hills Substation of the Colorado Springs Police Department,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release. “The Sheriff’s Office took custody of Mr. Lang and recovered the vehicle used in the incident.”

Lang is charged with 2nd degree murder, vehicular homicide and failure to report an accident involving death. As of Thursday, he was being held in the El Paso County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Witnesses who have not yet spoken to authorities are asked to call 719-520-7777.
