Bike racks will be temporarily unavailable on all Taranaki Regional Council operated bus services from Saturday 9 November.

The move followed the NZ Bus and Coach Association issuing a nationwide suspension after the Transport Agency sent out a safety alert.

The NZTA alert highlighted a compliance issue with some bus models where bike racks could partially block the headlights, creating a safety risk – even during the day.

New Zealand bus operators have unanimously agreed to suspend the use of bike racks until safety issues are addressed.

Council President Charlotte Littlewood was frustrated by the restriction, noting its impact on the region’s aim to promote integrated and low-emission travel options.

“We are very disappointed to be forced to implement this cycle rack ban as cycling, walking and bus use are essential to our efforts to reduce emissions and improve public health.

“We hope for a speedy resolution to this compliance issue so that the bike racks can be restored and, despite this being out of our control, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Transport engagement manager Cheryl Gazley said staff were working closely with NZTA and bus operators to assess the situation and determine the safest approach going forward.

“We thank our customers for their understanding and patience as we navigate this difficult situation and hope it will be resolved quickly. Our staff and drivers will be on hand to assist affected passengers.”
