FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii — The 28-year-old soldier whose pregnant wife disappeared in early August from an Army base in Hawaii was charged with murder Wednesday in the deaths of his wife and unborn child, the military said Thursday.

Pfc. Dewayne Arthur Johnson II was also charged with obstruction of justice and possession of child pornography “based on evidence obtained through the ongoing investigation,” according to a statement from the Army’s Office of Special Counsel at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

Mischa Johnson, 19, was six months pregnant when her husband reported her missing Aug. 1 from their home at Schofield Barracks in central Oahu.

Johnson’s body has not been found and the case remains under investigation.

Army Criminal Investigation Division agents told Mischa Johnson’s family that based on evidence found in the soldier’s home and car, they believe she is dead, Marianna Tapiz, the missing woman’s older sister, said in a stream live on Instagram in August.

Wednesday’s charges are in addition to similar ones previously filed by the same office, said Michelle McCaskill, a spokeswoman for the special counsel.

He he was charged on August 27 with false statements, obstruction of justice and distribution of child pornography.

Johnson is from Frederick, Md. and served as a cavalry scout in the 25th Infantry Division since June 2023.

He was arrested on August 7 and is being held at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.

Johnson is awaiting a preliminary hearing, which is required before the charges can be sent for trial by general court-martial under the regulations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

If charges are filed, he will be arraigned. A military judge would schedule preliminary hearings and the trial.

Johnson’s report on his missing wife included a series of searches on and around Schofield Barracks, which is the largest military base in the state.

Johnson told officers from the Honolulu Police Department and military police that his wife was “emotionally distraught.”

He led his platoon on a 6-mile search for his wife near the base days after he reported her missing, Tapiz said in the August live stream.

The missing woman’s family has appealed for eyewitnesses to come forward so her body can be found.

Army CID is asking anyone with information about Mischa Johnson to call its field office at 808-208-0559 or cid.army.mil/tips.
