Colorado School of Mines teacher arrested in crash that killed officer

A 43-year-old man Colorado School of Mines mechanical engineering teacher arrested and held overnight on DUI suspect crash who killed a Golden police officer is being investigated for homicide and vehicular assault.

Jefferson County Courthouse Judge Thomas Vance advised Stephen Geer Thursday morning of the charges he may face. Vance set bond for Geer’s release from custody at $250,000 and scheduled a Nov. 14 arraignment hearing. Geer has no criminal record and strong ties to the community.

Officers were outside their vehicle investigating the initial crash when a vehicle driven by the suspect struck a vehicle along a curve on an overpass, Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey said Wednesday evening.

The two officers were forced under the vehicle following the initial impact and were trapped, according to the authority Colorado State Patrol.

“There was one officer staged in a police car prior to the scene of the accident and two additional officers manning the scene of the accident when a passing vehicle entered the scene. Both officers at the scene of the original accident were struck and forced under the original accident vehicle,” CSP officials said in a news release Thursday morning.

Geer was “driving in a manner that was unsafe on an already unsafe day,” Chief Deputy Jeffco County District Attorney Alexa Visscher said in Thursday morning’s hearing.

Geer told police he drank a 16-ounce beer at a local brewery Wednesday before the collision at the scene of the accident on icy roads, defense attorney Lindsay Stone said at the hearing.
