A bystander helps apprehend the suspect after an officer-involved motorcycle crash in Holmesburg

Philadelphia police are investigating an officer-involved motorcycle crash in Holmesburg Wednesday night.

SKYFOX was live at the scene near Stanwood and Leon streets, where there was a heavy police presence.

Police sources told FOX 29’s Steve Keeley that a suspect on a dirt bike hit a police motorcycle.

Sources say the sergeant was riding his Harley-Davidson highway motorcycle westbound on Stanwood Street when he was struck by this dirt bike traveling northbound on Leon Street.

All the witnesses say that the exercise bikes were traveling at a high speed.

The dirt bike is said to have gone through the stop sign, hitting the left side of his motorcycle.

The motorcycle at the scene was not street legal because it was missing a license plate, headlights, taillights and indicators. It looked like it was made for a dirt track.

As the suspect attempted to escape, the injured officer yelled to a nearby homeowner, Tony Wade, to help contain the suspect at the scene.

Keeley was at the scene and spoke with Wade, who said a struggle ensued between him and the 22-year-old suspect during Wade’s heroic efforts to stop the suspect from fleeing.

The injured officer was then able to regain his feet enough to properly arrest the suspect.

The officer was taken by police to Nazareth Hospital.

This is an ongoing investigation.
