Navy Pier shooting: 1 of 2 killed by disgruntled Levy employee, identified as longtime worker Lamont Johnson; criminal still at large

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police continue to search for a gunman after two people were shot and killed at Navy Pier Tuesday afternoon.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified one of the victims as 51-year-old Lamont Johnson.

Johnson’s aunt said he has worked at Navy Pier for more than 20 years. The family is devastated by his death, saying he was a caring man who always helped those around him.

“The last 24 hours have left me numb, immobilized to the point where I’ve just been sitting all day,” said Candy Johnson Rogers.

The second victim has not yet been identified, while police are still searching for the gunman.

“I will remember him as a caring person, a giving person,” Candy Johnson said. “He reached out to help others, he was a good person.

Johnson leaves behind three daughters and a son.

“One daughter was in the hospital for 10 days, just went on Friday, stayed with her all day only to be brought to the same hospital, maybe in a body bag,” his aunt said.

Police said a disgruntled employee shot two of his former co-workers at Navy Pier on Tuesday. Police are still looking for that shooter.

“We brought out the automatic weapons, full SWAT gear, shields, the works,” said Trent Halasek, who was visiting from Ohio.

This happened as people thronged the popular tourist destination that afternoon.

“We had to close the whole store, close the whole Navy Pier,” Diamond Foster, who works at Navy Pier. “Everybody was just closing. I had customers coming in the back.”

Investigators said the suspect was fired from his job on Oct. 14.

The shooting caused the pier to go under a brief lockdown.

Although police said the incident took place in an office space of a loading dock, not in a public area.

“As the former employer of the subcontractor, he had access,” said Navy Pier Chief Operating Officer Brian Murphy. “He knew how to get to that area at the back of the loading dock and then we used our cameras to identify the fact that he left the dock.”
The two men died.

Levy confirmed that the victims worked for the restaurant and hospitality company, saying in part in a statement: “Our hearts break for their families and loved ones, whose lives are being changed forever.”

As of Wednesday morning, Chicago police said they had no one in custody. They know who they’re looking for, we’re told, but haven’t released the suspect’s name.
