British Independent Film Awards: List of nominees

The nominations for the British Independent Film Awards have been announced, as well as comedy from Belfast knee cap leads the way with 14 nominations.

The film, which tells the story real-life Irish-language hip-hop trioearned a ‘Best Joint Lead Performance’ nomination for group members Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairelláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh – also known as Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí.

Director Rich Peppiatt also found himself in the running for several categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay and the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director. Overall, the film was a huge success for the British Film Institute and the Irish-Language Broadcasting Fund of Northern Ireland, which partially funded its production.

During a exclusive interview with Away earlier this year Kneecap’s Móglaí Bap said of the group’s creative ethos: “If art can cause controversy, I think that’s a good thing because that’s the role of art in society. I think there’s a lack of that (controversy) in the music industry because people want to impress the major labels.”

The second most nominated film was Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleedinga bodybuilding noir starring Kristen Stewart and Ed Harris. It garnered 12 nominations, including Best Director and Best Screenplay for Glass, and Best Joint Lead Performance for Stewart and Katy O’Brian.

The Outrun followed closely behind with nine nominations, including Best Lead Performance for star Saoirse Ronan and Best Director for Nora Fingscheidt.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on December 8. See the full list of nominees below.
