Williamstown wins, Parkersburg loses in regional volleyball action

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – It was an action-packed night of regional volleyball in West Virginia with Parkersburg, Parkersburg South and Williamstown all competing in co-final matches with state tournament berths on the line.

Class AAAA top seed Parkersburg Lady Big Reds came up short at home as Cabell Midland handed them a straight set loss at the Fieldhouse.

In a back-and-forth set, the Lady Big Reds took a 15-13 lead after Ava Sayre laid down Kennedy Porter for a strong spike.

But the Lady Knights fought back and with the score tied at 21 late in the set, Jillian Yost dunked it into the open court to secure the point. That helped Cabell Midland come away with the victory to earn a share of the Region IV title and eliminate Parkersburg from the postseason.

In the other Region IV co-final, the Parkersburg South Lady Patriots also saw their season end as Spring Valley swept them in three sets at Huntington.

Both the Lady Timberwolves and Lady Knights share the Region IV title.

Meanwhile, in Class AA, the Williamstown Lady Jackets are back in the state tournament again. They defeated Wheeling Central at home in three sets to continue their journey to their fourth straight state championship.

In the first set, Kyndra Johnson set up Addisyn Kerby for the kill on set point to help the Lady Jackets to a 25-19 win.

After taking the second set as well, Williamstown dominated in the third set. At one point the team led 21-10. They added to it with Becca Shamblin hitting Madison Miehle and out to make it a 12-point lead.

Then, on match point, Kerby’s serve landed inbounds for the winning ace, giving the Lady Jackets a share of the Region I crown.

Next week is the WVSSAC State Volleyball Tournament at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. The games will start on Tuesday.
