A 55-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle early Wednesday in Escondido, police officials said.

The incident was reported just before 5:30 a.m. on Via Rancho Parkway near Westfield North County Mall.

Police arrived at the scene and found a man who was given CPR by bystanders, officials said in a statement. Officers continued CPR, but the man was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man was crossing the road when he was hit by a vehicle. The driver of the car remained at the scene and neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been factors.

The pedestrian’s name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
