The Dallas singer shot while signing autographs after the show

Police say the woman arrested for shooting a Dallas singer after a concert this weekend has admitted to the crime.

They say he watched the entire performance and then got an autograph after the concert before opening fire.

Police responded to reports of a shooting shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday in downtown Dallas.

Singer Jada Arnell Thomas, 26, was shot in the chest while signing autographs following a show Saturday night at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters in downtown Dallas.

Police say the shooter, 26-year-old Micah Williams, was just feet away from Thomas in the autograph line.

Almost 200 people were in the concert hall. Several witnesses told police they saw Williams shoot Thomas and then take off.

Curtis King, founder of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, followed Williams on foot to the Thompson Hotel near Akard.

“I went into a state of emotional rage where everything was a blur and a blur,” he recalled. “I walked out the door and said, ‘Where did the lady go?’ And they showed me the direction she went, I saw her through the glass doors, so I started running after her.

Officers arrested Williams in the hotel lobby. Police say a handgun was found in her purse.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by FOX 4, Williams admitted to being shot.

Williams also alleged that the victim had harassed her last year. However, FOX 4 was unable to verify that claim.

Investigators cannot interview the victim because she is still in the hospital.

King says once he saw Williams’ mug, he recognized it from more than a decade ago, but he’s still waiting for investigators to come up with a motive.

“They said, ‘Mr. King, she performed here at the Black Academy.’ She was in a summer program 10-12 years ago,” he said. “I will not allow people to walk in fear and come to a place that I like.”

King says he’s beefing up security by adding metal detectors and having a single entrance.

Williams faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Dallas County Jail.

Thomas remains in the hospital. He was barely able to communicate after coming out of surgery on Monday night. For now, he can only communicate by writing on a piece of paper, but he is making progress in his recovery.

Performances originally scheduled for Monday have been canceled.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
